“This is America” – Childish Gambino

Childish Gambino or Donald Glover release the video for his song “This is America” on May 5th and it already has 59 million views. This song is commenting on gun violence in America and this video depicts what actually goes on in America. Glover begins the video by dancing, then out of nowhere he pulls out a gun and shoots the innocent black man playing the guitar. The murder weapon is placed in a cloth and carried away while the black man’s dead body is dragged away by two random men.
The beat picks up and the dancing resumes, this time and for the majority of the video Glover is joined with a group of black school children. As the group and Glover dance in the foreground of the video, it is important to pay attention to the background. The background shows the rest of the world, to put it bluntly, going to $#!+. This is exactly how we deal with gun violence in America, we pay attention to it the day it happens then maybe we remember it throughout the week when we see social media posts about it.
But then what happens? We go back to our lives and having a good time with our friends, while the world around us is a ticking time bomb. The video is meant to make the viewer uncomfortable because as humans we should be uncomfortable with the amount of gun violence occurring in America right now.
